Tourists cannot resist the lure of Lanzarote’s endless stretches of beach, which cover everything from golden, sandy terrain and dramatic cliff-faces to volcanic landscapes and bustling watersports resorts.
While the secret may be out about some of the island’s beaches, there are tons of hidden gems that allow you to escape the crowds and lounge in peace – you just need to know where to go.
Once you’ve arrived on your Lanzarote getaway, venture to one of these beautiful beaches for tranquility and true R&R – everything a holiday is for.
Punta del Papagayo
This cluster of beaches is perfect for when you just want to kick back and chill without other holidaymakers and large families disturbing you. Situated on the southern tip of Lanzarote, the beaches here are sheltered by cliffs and tucked away in a protected area named the Monumental Natural de Los Ajaches.
You won’t have to fight for space to set down your beach towels or picnic here, and you can admire beautiful scenery while you relax with a book. The 15-minute walk from the car park to the sand is worth it for the stunning views you can take in on your journey.
Going for a dip in the warm, blue waters is a joy, and some parts of the beaches are specially reserved for naturists, so if you’re not afraid to get your kit off and even out your tan lines, you’ll feel right at home.
Famara
You’ll often find during a stroll down Famara beach, otherwise known as the European Hawaii, that you and your family are the only ones there, which is perfect for those of you after secluded spots.
Spanning six kilometres in north Lanzarote, it is the ideal place for an afternoon walk, with the sun beating down on you and the backdrop of Le Risco de Famara cliffs providing plenty of photo opportunities, It can get pretty windy here, making it great for watersports but not for sunbathing.
After a day’s spent surfing or hiking, eat at one of the many beautiful seafood restaurant in Caleta de Famara, a small village next to the beach. You might bump into a few other people here, but the atmosphere is very relaxed and there’s no pressure to be sociable.
Playa Las Conchas
Hidden on the island of La Graciosa in north Lanzarote, Playa Las Conchas is a heavenly haven away from the chaos of the more popular resorts. While visitors are advised to take some caution when swimming here, as the waves can be extremely powerful, it is a lovely place to catch some rays.
You probably won’t find yourself alone here, as the locals come to Playa Las Conchas to escape the tourists, but you’ll enjoy a much more peaceful day out than at most other beaches. As it has been made a national park, the whole area is kept very clean and it is well looked after.
One thing you should take note of is that there is little – make that nothing – here besides the beach. You won’t see hotels or restaurants for miles, but that is why it appeals to so many people. Its isolated and unspoilt nature is all part of its charm.
